Concert poster for "The Grateful Ball" featuring The Travelin' McCourys and the Jeff Austin Band. As obtained for the two in-person signatures (Ronnie McCoury and Alan Bartram) at the Sweetwater Music Hall at Mill Valley, California on February 25, 2017. Was created by the progressive bluegrass outfit The Travelin' McCourys as a "bluegrassified" tribute celebrating the timeless catalog of the Grateful Dead. The concept originally launched as a one-off performance on June 10, 2016, at the Urban Chestnut Brewing / Atomic Cowboy Pavilion in St. The performance partnered the Travelin' McCourys with the Jeff Austin Band (led by the late mandolinist and former Yonder Mountain String Band co-founder Jeff Austin).
The event proved so popular that it quickly evolved into a multi-year touring franchise. Each night followed a rigorous, high-energy format. A full opening acoustic bluegrass set by the Jeff Austin Band. A full bluegrass set by The Travelin' McCourys. A massive collaborative third set where both bands took the stage together to play extended, jamgrass arrangements of classic Grateful Dead material (such as "Althea", "Loose Lucy", and "Cumberland Blues").
The poster provided comes from their February 2017 West Coast run, stopping at iconic venues like the Crystal Bay Club Casino in Nevada and The Catalyst in Santa Cruz. Following the massive success of their 2016 and 2017 dates, the Travelin' McCourys continued taking the theme on the road and to major music festivals (such as the John Hartford Memorial Festival and Shoe Fest). While Jeff Austin was the primary initial co-headliner, the Travelin' McCourys later expanded the "Grateful Ball" umbrella to collaborate with other notable roots and jamgrass artists, including the Larry Keel Experience and The Brothers Comatose. The tour successfully bridges the gap between traditional bluegrass execution and the expansive, improvisational spirit of the Grateful Dead's songbook.
Excellent; perfectly preserved with the two artist signatures, as obtained from the original concert attendees in 2017.
