Grateful Dead "Skull and Roses" Avalon Poster #FD26-3, Third Printing, 9/16-17/66 (Bindweed Press/Family Dog, 1966). A rare concert poster advertising a series of September, 1966 shows by the Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. Popularly know as Skeleton & Roses, it features artwork by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley.

Designated FD-26 (RP-3) in the Family Dog concert poster series. This is a 1966 third printing as shown by the 26(3) and Family Dog Productions 1966 1725 Washington Street San Francisco in the lower left corner. The Bindweed Press, San Francisco appears in the border above the right side of the ticket outlets strip. The central image is a 1913 woodcut by Edmund Sullivan, illustrating the 26th quatrain of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

An example of this poster was featured in the Smithsonians 20th Century American Posters exhibit and accompanying book. The duo discovered this illustration by 19th century artist, Edward Joseph Sullivan, for an edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The Skull and Roses from this very poster would be appropriated by the Dead for the rest of their careers and go on to be a world famous, internationally recognized logo for the band. Although this is the third printing of this poster, it was printed at the time of the concert.
