GRATEFUL DEAD Concert Poster 1973 ORIGINAL Jerry Garcia Harvey Weinstein. ORIGINAL ULTRA-RARE Grateful Dead Concert Poster March 31, 1973 Buffalo, NY "A Rock n Roll Band Thatned a Generation". BEST CONDITION EVER SEEN FOR THIS POSTER!!! One of the rarest, most important and sought-after Grateful Dead concert posters. This 42 year old, original concert poster is nearly impossible to find with a clean front.
A "New Riders of the Purple Sage" sticker was affixed to the print days before the show in March of 1973, when the Riders joined the concert bill at last minute. This poster is from the first Grateful Dead concert produced by Harvey Weinstein, the movie producer of the Weinstein Company. Along with his brother Bob Weinstein, and Corky Burger he independently produced rock concerts as Harvey & Corky Productions in Buffalo through most of the 1970s. The Weinstein brothers (along with Burger) are credited with bringing the Grateful Dead to Buffalo. This poster marks the first true Grateful Dead concert in Buffalo. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan is pictured on this poster, although he passed away on March 8th, 1973, just 23 days before the show. "Pigpen" is not often pictured on Dead concert posters. This poster, A Rock n Roll Band Thatned a Generation is unique and a real treasure among Grateful Dead concert posters. Unlike any other poster before or after it, this piece showcases the entire psychedelic movement and counter culture revolution from its birth in Northern California. The poster pays homage to a generation; it boldly depicts Red from Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest balancing Tom Wolfes epic The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test upon his head. Keseys Further Bus, with Merry Pranksters on the roof surging from the pages riding on the San Francisco Bay Bridge, which fades from deep in the pages of the book.Leaning up against the front of the bus is Sam Cutler, at the time the tour manager for the Dead. However, he is best known as former tour manager for the Rolling Stones. Cutler has been casually demonized as an unwitting, yet primary, catalyst of the violence that took place at the 1969 Altamont Free Concert. Following the events at Altamont, Cutler stayed in the U. To deal with the aftermath, was befriended by Jerry Garcia, and subsequently hired by the Grateful Dead as their tour manager.
He went on to become a co-manager of the band (with Jon McIntire and David Parker) and eventually became their agent. Cutler coordinated the Dead's appearances at a number of memorable events including: the 1970 Festival Express Tour of Canada, The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen (over 700,000 fans paid admission the largest single paid admission events in rock n roll history), and the 1972 European Tour of the Grateful Dead. To the right of the bus a melting Ice Nine cube is depicted. Ice-nine is a fictional material appearing in Kurt Vonnegut's novel Cat's Cradle. It is supposed to be a more stable form of water than common ice, which instead of melting at 0°C, melts at 45.8 °C. In Vonnegut's novel, when ice-nine comes into contact with liquid water below 45.8 °C, it acts as a seed crystal, and causes the solidification of the entire body of water which quickly crystallizes as ice-nine. The issue of global catastrophe involving freezing the Earth's oceans by simple contact with ice-nine is the centerpiece of the book. Just below the Ice Nine cube is the Grateful Deads official clown, Wavy Gravy with one of his hogs.
Gravy founded the Hog Farm, an activist commune and a working collective hog farm in Tujunga, California. The Hog Farm eventually evolved into a "mobile, hallucination-extended family", active internationally in both music and politics. Today, it is considered to be America's longest running hippie commune. In front of the poster and centered above their name proudly stand the Grateful Dead; Gerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. There are little hidden treasures throughout the piece; some of the pages in the book contain words and number phrases, the name Neal Cassady is scrawled down the spine of the book.
While the name Ken Kesey is buried in the grill of the bus. The piece is truly unique, splendidly capturing so much of a generation and a cultural revolution, the bringing together of music, art and literature. Type: Off-set, 2 Color Print. War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY.
