This iconic piece of rock history is so rare and hard to find, it's like seeing a unicorn. It rarely comes up for sale even at those prices. Here's a chance to own the original for a song and save a piece of rock history. The poster has been in my family a long time.
We are the original owners (our 1968 commune was decorated with rock posters). On the original 1st print heavy stock, it measures 1st print dimensions of 21 3/4" by 26 1/4". It is not numbered like the 2nd & 5th printing, it bears no'Jose' insignia like the 3rd printing, and has not the tickets like the 4th printing. If you desire further authentication, you may get it.I know it's history. Since the poster has all it's edges, it only needs cosmetic attention; cleaning, acid free linen backing & touch ups. ALWAYS choose a'museum quality' restoration business with good references and reputation. A poster this valuable should be trusted to someone skilled and honest. I contacted the rock poster society.
They referred me to a few places. I have disclosed; cracking on edges, thumbtack holes, a few creases, stains, and curl from being rolled etc.. Is a first print poster from the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. It was used to promote a trio of shows featuring the Grateful Dead, Sons of Champlin & Initial Shock. The shows were presented by Soundproof, and took place January 24-26, 1969, roughly a year after the last Family Dog show at the historic venue. This is truly one of the iconic images from the psychedelic-era (so much so that the Dead chose it as cover art for their "AOXOMOXOA" album). It was designed by the late Rick Griffin, and is featured in "The Art Of Rock", plate 2.24. Here is some information on identifying various printings of this poster. Ours is the first of course.
